What you need to know about this photograph...

While visiting London for a Torture Garden party some years ago I noticed this girl wearing this very elaborate android-style costume.

Needless to say, I wanted to take a couple of photos of her. I wanted to capture something unique with her, not just an on-camera flash image with a bunch of party-goers in the background. So I took her to the side of the ballroom and placed her under overhead recessed tungsten light. I left the White Balance setting set to Flash and let the Tungsten light color do what it did.

I chose a slow enough shutter speed to enable the Tungsten light to compete with the on-camera Flash, this created this balance in brightness between the two light sources. I find using mixed light sources to be very interesting and a lot of fun. There are no rules, just a rudimentary understanding of the different temperatures of light. Have fun, explore.

Here are the settings for this shot…
Canon 28-135mm 3.5 -5.6 lens, shot at 130mm at f/5.6, 0.3/sec, ISO 400. On-Camera Flash under Tungsten light white balance set to Flash.

If you have some favorite mixed-light photos I would love to have you share them here.
