This photograph was taken while on my drive through North Carolina to photograph the fall colors. This is pretty much the weather I had for the entire trip. But weather can oftentimes provide an opportunity to photograph a location or event with a more unique look.

 

Often times when the weather isn’t what a photographer hoped for they will pack up their gear and commit to coming back another day. That’s great, but I think you should start with what you see at the moment no matter what the weather. Challenge yourself to find just the right image. Maybe you won’t find it until you are back in your office going through your best efforts before you find something that was worth enduring the less desirable weather.

 

While this photograph isn’t my favorite photo from that trip it is definitely one that I enjoy viewing and sharing. My challenge was to get all of the vertical and horizontal lines to line up in an aesthetically pleasing form. You tell me if I accomplished it, I feel as though I did. But I am interested in your opinion as to whether or not I did.

 

In the post, using Photoshop, I chose to convert to B&W and add grain. Without the grain, the image seemed too soft and did not pull my eye into the scene. I guess the fog without the grain made the image feel shallow, with the grain it has more depth.

 

This photo also feels very “Quiet” to me. Or maybe because I took it and I know it was deeply silent.

Here are the specs for the settings when I took the image.. f/8, 1/80 sec, ISO 640 shot with my Canon 24-70mm f/2.8 L series lens set to 68mm.
